Large Carved Chestnut Full-bodied Sperm Whale

Large, full-bodied sperm whale carving by Maryland artist Tom Waite. Tom used salvaged chestnut timbers sourced from a 19th century Lancaster Pennsylvania barn. With the dramatic grain patterns in this particular hard wood species, the artist feels that the medium helps to guide in the creation of his unique style of marine folk art. While difficult to carve, this now extinct wood provides the artist with unexpected challenges and wonderful surprises as the sculpture takes form. Displayed on a steel, cylindrical base. Signed and dated on the bottom of the base.  

Measures 33 inches in length, 9 inches wide (at fins) and stands 19 inches tall including base. The whale weighs 19 pounds and 50 pounds including base.
