A 19th century combination port and starboard running lamp. This old marine lantern is composed of galvanized metal with a brass chimney cap and hanging ring. The ruby-red and emerald-blue Freznel lenses are made of thick, wavy glass and survive in perfect condition. The upper chimney is designed with a series of classic 'Christmas tree' shaped air vents. The back of the lamp is rectangular with a simple shoe attached in the center for mounting to the marine vessel.
This nautical lamp also retains it's original brass bayonet twist type oil font with a small, removable burner. It is lightly embossed "CONVEX" on one side and features a simple wick advance knob. The lamp is unmarked and the actual manufacturer is unknown, but we are pretty confident that it is an American made light. The slide-out curtain divider was removed in it's history and is no longer with the fixture. The lamp stands 9 inches tall, exclusive of the hanging ring and 4 7/8 inches in diameter. The brass surfaces on the lamp retain a wonderful soft bronze patina. A nice example of a 19th century small boat lamp!
