SCRIMSHAW LETTER OPENER BY SAM MCDOWELL, CIRCA 2005
Scrimshawed letter opener featuring three sailing ships racing under full sail, black and white scrimshaw on an oval bone handle with highly polished steel rope surround, created by the late Sam McDowell. The backside of the steel blade is engraved "COLLECTOR KNIVES BY SAM MCDOWELL" in the center and "SAKI-CITY JAPAN" at the bottom. The scrimshawed handle is a fine example of McDowell's artwork. The paper knife or letter opener measures 6/8 of an inch wide and 6 inches in length. The knife comes with a hand-sewn leather (alligator skin style) sheath.
CONDITION: The steel blade has minor abrasion marks on the top edge of the opener. Otherwise, it survives in good, useable condition. The sheath is also in good condition.
The stainless steel was made custom for Sam McDowell in Seki City Japan by the Kai Cutlery Company, the descendants of samurai sword makers. The scrimshaw is made out of highly polished camel bone. Each is a one of a kind piece of art signed or engraved by the artist.
