1970's era mixed media wood signboard, painted by Jack Woodson of the Schooner “Gertrude L. Thebaud” with applied intricate paper compass rose. Signed, lower left "WOODSON" by the artist.
This signboard was acquired years ago from an Outer Banks restaurant. Measures 32 X 40 inches with molded edge. Small areas of paint loss in lower left and in the sails.
John "Jack" Waddie Woodson, (1913-1992) was a contemporary of Norman Rockwell and Andrew Wyeth, a Richmond native, was an illustrator with an international reputation for his vivid, realistic paintings of sailing ships, maritime subjects, and boats.
A copy of the book "Down to the Sea with Jack Woodson : The Artistry of a Distinguished American Illustrator" by Tazewell William L, will accompany the painting.
