probably original black painted surface.

working order. Original
top swing handle and hanging hook.
Embossed
“DIETZ” in oval, makers label on front of top and punched the
number “3” to the side. To
the right is engraved “PATENTED AUG. 27- O7.” Also,
the lantern is embossed “DIETZ” and “KING” on
the front
and
“FIRE DEPT” on the backside of the top of the
fluid container. The
original glass globe is stamped “C11.”
The
Dietz Fire Department lantern was widely used by fire department
companies around the United States. It was manufactured in two
similar forms, the older from featured a drop down cage. Those
manufactured after 1906 were hinged caged.
